Before You Go: 5 Ways to Prepare For Your Vacation

The tickets are booked, room is reserved and excursions are planned! Now you just have to make sure you are ready to go when the time arrives.

Preparing for your vacation can be exciting but also overwhelming with the never ending to-do list before you leave. To feel confident leaving your daily life behind, follow these five travel tips to get ready for your next adventure.

1. Share your itinerary

To eliminate confusion and excessive questions make sure everyone in your traveling party has all the details. You should also forward your itinerary to our emergency contact. This is especially important if traveling internationally for safety reasons.

2. Clean Your House

It’s an unwritten rule, but you’ll thank me when you come home after a long day of traveling and find that you have clean clothes ready for you. You’re sad from leaving your vacation so make sure you’re not completely devastated by not having chores to do right away!

It’s also a good idea to have the house picked up in case an emergency requires someone to come into your home while you’re gone or if you have pet sitters checking in!

Home is wherever you leave everything you love and never question that it will be there when you return.

3. Set Your Out of Office

Get all the necessary tasks done at work or home before you go and leave the little stuff behind. Set your out of office notification so clients and colleagues know not to bother you. Leave an emergency message if you’re the type that has a hard time leaving work at work. You paid good money and saved your valuable time for vacation–don’t let your work life ruin your personal life.

4. Packing List

Packing lists are a must to stay organized and (hopefully) not forget anything. It helps if you break it into sections so you can focus on one area at a time to ensure you include all your needed items. Make sure to highlight the extra important items like travel documents, identification, medications and currency.

5. Take Care of Business

Make a checklist of all the tasks that need to be scheduled or people that need to be notified before you go. Tasks to consider are:

  • Schedule your pet sitter/kennel

  • Notify your bank of travel plans so credit cards don’t get flagged

  • Notify your phone provider, especially important for international phone coverage

  • Stop your mail

  • Notify a neighbor to help keep any eye out

  • Schedule car maintenance *highly recommend if going on a road trip

Traveling is supposed to be stress free and exciting so make sure it starts that way by doing these five things before leaving on vacation!
